Hey Fans, Friends, and Fellows,

I love to customize things. If I see a means of making something more fabulous, I’m absolutely going to do it. This is especially true if I can get things on the cheap. The tray I made to keep my wallet and keys in is a good example of this. I know there are plenty of other people who share this passion. Sometimes I think of writing as one of the best means of customizing. We take an existing plot, form of poetry, character archetype, or trope and make them our own.

Writing Prompt: Write a piece that involves the concept of customization.

Hey Fans, Friends, and Fellows,

It bums me out just a little that parasols fell out of style. Before you tell me I could just carry an umbrella, I already do. I also put a crap ton of sunscreen on because my family has a history of skin cancer. So what am I complaining about? Parasols are pretty. And yes, I can get a pretty umbrella. (In fact, I already have one.) It just doesn’t ever feel quite like I’m a wealthy aristocrat who wants to go for a leisurely stroll with my suitor but can’t survive the sun. Okay, I’m joking, but if at any point I get a time machine, I’m absolutely going to hop in there and go steal a legit parasol from the height of their popularity.

Writing Prompt: Write a piece about something that’s fallen out of style that you miss or wish was still popular.

Hey Fans, Friends, and Fellows,

I often feel like my interests could fill several lifetimes. There never seems to be enough time in the day to finish everything on my to-do lists as it is. I think that I’m doing a decent job at prioritizing the things most important to me. In less confident moments, I worry that I’m either not doing enough or not doing the right things to prevent myself from looking back and having regrets. I remind myself whenever possible that all I can do is my best, and that will have to be good enough.

Writing Prompt: Write a piece about self-doubt and how to cope with it.

Hey Fans, Friends, and Fellows,

I previously mentioned on this blog that I was starting a Patreon account. I did so and followed all the recommendations for attracting patrons, but I wasn’t getting any. I wasn’t expecting to have a hoard of fans throwing money at me right away. But I was expecting some traffic to my page. I decided the other day to start checking out other Patreon users who use the same tags as me. I figured it would help me see if there was something I was doing wrong. Each tag that I searched came up with either empty or scarce results. I searched my name next and found no results. This pissed me off enough to message them. Apparently, my page had been marked as NSFW. They said this is why it wasn’t showing up in search results. I find this excuse to be unacceptable and honestly homophobic, as I don’t really write NSFW content. It’s not like I’m writing erotica. The thing that really pissed me off though is that even if I was writing NSFW content, my name should still pop up if someone searches it specifically. If they’re searching for me rather than any of the tags there’s a high likelihood that they already know what my content is like and want to find it. I’m shutting down my Patreon account and seeking a similar service that doesn’t pull this kind of homophobic nonsense.

Writing Prompts: Write a piece that explores censoring or silencing someone’s creativity.

Hey Fans, Friends, and Fellows,

I’ve been enjoying H.G. Parry’s A Declaration of the Rights of Magicians so much! Adding magic to the class system of 1700 England and France has made me very curious to learn more about the time period. From the minimal googling I’ve done and what I already knew from school, it seems like Parry stayed as true as possible to the actual history of the time period. I think that reading this book and the history of the french revolution is a good place to start if you’re looking to start building a class-based system of your own.

Writing Prompt: Write a piece that explores a class system of your creation or one from real life that you are familiar with.

Hey Fans, Friends, and Fellows,

I have a bad habit of picking at my cuticles when they start to fray. I know I should just leave them alone, maybe even look into something to prevent them from being damaged at all. But inevitably I pull at those little bits of skin turning a minor aesthetic annoyance into an actual wound. The worst part is I catch myself doing it and won’t stop sometimes.

Writing Prompt: Write a piece that explores bad habits. Don’t just explore the damage they do. There is a strange sometimes morbid motivation that keeps us doing these things. Take some time to write about that motivation.

Hey Fans, Friends, and Fellows,

From time to time, I get the urge to run. I don’t mean this in the “exercise gives you endorphins” way. I feel an urge to leave my entire life behind and see if I could actually restart. I don’t talk about it much, partly because it feels a bit silly and partly because it feels self-destructive. There are enough things that I love in my life that I have never given in to that urge. That doesn’t mean that it isn’t there, though.

Writing Prompt: Write a piece about an urge or desire that isn’t acted on. What is holding the person back?
